A Quick Breather

Sat Oct 24, 2009, 12:26 PM
Last week I finished a big crunch of work, and though I'm still pretty busy work-wise, at least I can sleep more than 3-4 hours per night! It's been a rough couple of months!

The job I just finished was a 16-page story for the upcoming December issue of THE ROTARIAN magazine. It is a "graphic biography" (comic book) about the founder of Rotary International, Paul Harris. That may not sound exciting, but it was, in fact, a very fun job. Most of the story's action takes place in Chicago during the years 1890-1920, and it was fun and challenging doing the research & working with reference to give the art an authentic feel. Much of the story is drawn using heavy shadows and a monochromatic palette, which also gives the story a sophisticated look. Also cool is the fact that I drew the cover are for the magazine. I'll post some of the work here soon.

Now I'm just finishing my latest comic strip for the teen magazine and I'm coloring a pop-up book for DC Comics. As these things wind down, I'll be scrounging for more work, and hopefully spending some time developing some of my personal projects.

Can you believe it's almost NOVEMBER?!?!?! 2009 is flying by.

Catch ya later, devious ones!

Hi there. Nice to meet you, too. Keep in touch & let me know if you follow up on any of the stuff we talked about. being a professional artist is very difficult & competitive, so you really need to push yourself to learn new skills. I think those classes we talked about (like industrial design) would really help your overall drawing skills. Pretty much ANY art classes help, but it's good to challenge yourself by tackling subjects that seem difficult or unrelated. As I said on Saturday, a comic book/manga artist needs to be able to draw almost anything & everything, make it look convincing, and serve the storytelling. Classes in storyboard art, perspective drawing, interior design or ANYTHING will help.

Take it easy!--but not TOO easy! ;)

Hey Steve are you going to be at Comicon??
:iconweaselguy:
Actually, this is the first year in over a decade that I wasn't planning to go. Will DeviantART have a presence there?
